Workshop Description

From its inception, generative grammar centered on the descriptive and explanatory adequacy of the attained steady state in language learning but it also put at the center of the research agenda the explanation of 'Plato's problem' (how come we acquire knowledge without explicit evidence or teaching). Thus, learnability was put and it used to be at the forefront of research in generative grammar in the early 1980s, with profound research on the Language Acquisition Device, Poverty of Stimulus, Universal Grammar, and the parametric options that it was open to (cf. Piattelli-Palmarini (1980), Lightfoot (1982)). However, we feel that the answer that the Principles and Parameters theory was providing to Plato's Problem is not satisfying anymore. The notion of parameter has been deeply discussed and even more, lately the availability of UG itself has been disputed in other traditions (cf., i.a. Elman et al. (1996), Clark & Lappin (2011)). Thus, we feel that after two decades in the background, learnability ought to make a comeback in linguistic theorizing, and generative grammarians ought to take advantage of findings in other fields and linguistic traditions to rethink Plato's problem in a broader biolinguistic context. With this goal in mind, we have organized a Summer Course that will address these issues with different points of view. Thus, the general goal of this course is to revisit the nature of Universal Grammar and the role of language learning strategies in shaping the acquired language, linguistic diversity and language change. Call for Papers

In addition to the invited speakers, we would like to invite anyone interested to submit an abstract for a dedicated poster session on any aspect of learnability and language variation that they are working on. We welcome contributions in language variation, language change, theoretical and empirical works on acquisition and learnability, pattern recognition, phonological bootstraping, etc.

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts are invited for a poster session. As reviewing will be double-blind, abstracts should be anonymous ; author's information should be submitted in the accompanying email. Please send your abstract (PDF format, two pages, including references and using a 12 pt. font type) to the co-organizers (cedric.boeckx@ub.edu and aritz.irurtzun@iker.cnrs.fr).

How to get there

The workshop/school will take place at the Miramar Palace, in Donostia-San San Sebastian. The official tourism information webpage can be found here.

San Sebastian can easily be reached by plane, train or bus.

By plane :

For most foreign visitors, probably the best way to get to San Sebastian is to fly to Bilbao International Airport (BIO) and to get to downtown San Sebastian by bus (there are regular buses departing every hour from the Bilbao airport terminal and getting to San Sebastian in one hour). An alternative is to fly to the San Sebastian Airport (EAS), which is a domestic one, and then to get to San Sebastian by taxi. However, this option is normally more expensive (usually it also involves one more flight and the taxi fares to/from the airport are not cheap) and there is not much gain in time comparing to flying to Bilbao, given that the airport is located at about a 25 minutes drive from downtown San Sebastian.

By train :

There are regular RENFE trains connecting San Sebastian to Barcelona and Madrid. There is also an easy connection with the trains arriving from Bordeaux, Paris, etc. (SNCF). If you are coming from France and are taking the latter option, we would recommend you to stop at the SNCF station at Hendaye and then taking the surface metro of the company called 'Euskotren', which is situated just at the exit of the SNCF station, to the right. This company serves San Sebastian very regularly and it will leave you at the city center.

By bus :

San Sebastian can also be easily reached by bus from many major cities in Spain (with the companies PESA, La Burundesa and ALSA-Continental) as well as France and the rest of Europe via Eurolines.

Accomodation

San Sebastian is a touristic city and late June is the beginning of the summer touristic season, thus we recommend to book your accommodation early. The conference venue is located at the city center so if you are located at any hotel/hostal downtown, it won't probably take you more than a 10 minutes walk to get to the Miramar Palace. There are many hotels close to the Workshop venue, among them La Galeria, Barceló Costa Vasca and NH Aranzazu. The organization of the Summer Courses has also arranged some accommodation options which might be convenient (hostels). Check out them here. Besides, there are many other options around the city.

Registration

Fill out this PDF form (our workshop is the "Activity 3.2 : In Search of New Ways to Understand Language Variation, Change and Acquisition") and make a bank transfer of 40 € to the account number that appears therein. Then send the form and the proof of transfer to the address that appears in the form. When filling the form, leave blank the slots that do not apply to you (for instance, accommodation, in case you make your own reservations elsewhere).

Un lointain ancêtre maternel des Basques et de leurs voisins

La revue scientifique American Journal of Human Genetics (AJHG) a publié le 9 mars 2012 les résultats de l'une des deux études concluant le projet HIPVAL.

Titre : The Basque Paradigm : Genetic Evidence of a Maternal Continuity in the Franco-Cantabrian Region since Pre-Neolithic Times
Auteurs : Doron M. Behar [1], [2], Christine Harmant [3], [4], Jeremy Manry [5], [6], Mannis van Oven [7], Wolfgang Haak [8], Begoña Martinez-Cruz [9], Jasone Salaberria [10], Bernard Oyharçabal [11], Frédéric Bauduer [12], David Comas, [13], Lluis Quintana-Murci [14], [15], et The Genographic Consortium.

Réalisée à partir de l'étude de 908 échantillons d'ADN mitochondial recueillis auprès d'individus dont les quatre grands-parents étaient nés dans une même zone des Pyrénées occidentales, cette recherche vient confirmer, avec des éléments d'analyse nouveaux, l'hypothèse d'une continuité génétique partielle entre les populations basques contemporaines et celles ayant occupé la région au mésolithique. La recherche a permis d'identifier six haplogroupes caractéristiques des populations concernées. Elle a également permis d'évaluer la date de séparation d'avec l'ensemble génétique pan-européen : environ -8000 ans avant le présent, c'est-à-dire à une période antérieure à l'expansion indoeuropéenne dans la région et à la propagation de l'agriculture.

Cette publication, réalisée sous la direction de L. Quintana-Murci (CNRS, Institut Pasteur), devrait être suivie prochainement d'une autre étude portant sur l'analyse de l'ADN du chromosome Y (filiation patrilinéaire), et conduite sous la direction de D. Comas (Université Pompeu Fabra), à paraître dans la revue Molecular Biology and Evolution.

Les opérations de collecte et d'extraction d'ADN ayant permis ces deux études ont été réalisées sous la direction de F. Bauduer (CHCB et Bordeaux 2) dans une vaste région allant de la Bigorre à la province de Cantabrie en Espagne, et de la Chalosse aux provinces de la Rioja et Burgos. Ces travaux constituent la principale conclusion du projet HIPVAL (Histoire des populations et variation linguistique dans les Pyrénées occidentales) sous la responsabilité de B. Oyharçabal au centre IKER à Bayonne (CNRS, Bordeaux 3, UPPA).

Le projet avait été initié en 2005 dans le cadre du programme Origine de l'Homme, des langues et du langage du CNRS, et a bénéficié d'un financement régional (Aquitaine) et départemental (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).

La bibliothèque HABE facilite l'accès à sa documentation

L'Institut public HABEa signé une convention avec le laboratoire IKER et trois autres acteurs de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche Soziolinguistika Klusterra, Mintzola Fundazioa et la Fundación Asmoz favorisant l'utilisation de ressources documentaires dans les domaines du multilinguisme et de l'enseignement des langues.

Aujourd'hui la bibliothèque HABE dispose d'environ 40000 documents et 650 titres de revue. L'accord passé à Donostia-Saint-Sébastien le 16 décembre 2011 définit les modalités de fourniture de documents scientifiques et techniques à la communauté scientifique basque. A partir du 1er janvier 2012 les chercheurs et doctorants du centre de recherche IKER pourront recevoir sur simple demande les sommaires de revues et le texte intégral des articles présents dans les abonnements de la bibliothèque HABE par voie électronique.

Appel à présentation

Nous accueillons des résumés de travail sur tous les aspects de la recherche linguistique sur les langues celtiques. Les sujets principaux sont, de manière non-exclusive, la syntaxe, la phonologie, la phonétique, la sociolinguistique, les technologies liées au langues, ainsi que les problématiques liées à la recherche sur les langues minorisées ou en danger.

La conférence inclut des présentations orales (30 minutes, discussion incluse) et des sessions posters. L'auteur ou les auteurs doivent mentionner leur format de présentation de préférence lors de l'envoi des résumés.

La langue de la conférence, communications orales et posters, est l'anglais.

Les résumés doivent être fournis en format pdf, txt ou doc en utilisant l'interface à l'adresse : http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/CLC7-2012.

Format des résumés : 2 pages maximum (A4 ou format lettre, caractères 12, marges de 2.5cm/1-inch), incluant les exemples et références. Les résumés seront évalués de façon anonyme, et il est donc recommandé d'éviter toute forme d'autoréférence dans le résumé. Information sur les langues parlées dans l'Etat français

Résumé

Entrelangues est un site universitaire d'information sur les langues parlées dans l'État français.

Vous y trouverez un inventaire des langues de l'État français, avec des informations documentées sur la vitalité de la langue en question, suivant les critères définis par l'Unesco.

Chaque langue fait l'objet d'un article de description mené par au moins un.e spécialiste universitaire, suivi d'une bibliographie extensive sur sa sociolinguistique, mais aussi sur sa grammaire (morphologie, syntaxe et phonologie).

Ce site est aussi un portail d'information vers les différents projets de recherche menés sur les langues parlées dans l'État français. Vous y trouverez une description détaillée des recherches actuelles.

Syntaxe de la langue bretonne

Résumé

Le site ARBRES est un outil pour l'apprentissage et la recherche sur la syntaxe de la langue bretonne. Il est destiné aux linguistes, aux apprenant(e)s et aux curieux des langues.

L'apprenant(e) peut y trouver en ligne une grammaire du breton de plus de 600 pages. Cette grammaire emprunte des exemples dans de multiples corpus produits par des locuteurs natifs, et renseigne sur les variations dialectales du breton dans sa structure grammaticale.

Les exemples sont fournis avec une traduction en français et des gloses, c'est à dire une traduction mot à mot. Les gloses sont cliquables et renvoient chacune à un article concernant l'élément traduit, ce qui rend possible une navigation d'apprentissage.

Dans un usage pédagogique, une liste des bretonnismes usuels en français renvoie aux points de grammaire qui leur correspond en breton. Le site fournit aussi de nombreux outils à la recherche linguistique :

–* une bibliographie exhaustive des ouvrages de recherche sur la syntaxe du breton, avec des liens vers les documents disponibles in extenso sur le web –* une liste des auteurs brittophones, natifs d'une variété géographisée de breton, qui ont produit des corpus utilisables par les linguistes –* une carte de Bretagne des ressources connues sur les différents dialectes –* des références de corpus écrits et oraux pouvant servir de matière à l'analyse –* des pages de liens de ressources sur le breton en français, breton et anglais

Enfin, la grammaire descriptive est de type wiki et participatif. Trace peut être gardée en ligne de l'échange entre chercheurs sur un point de grammaire particulier Votre grand-mère ne dit pas pareil ? Vous connaissez une autre forme ? Vous pouvez le signaler en page de discussion, ou intervenir directement sur le texte. La grammaire ARBRES et ses ressources sont adossés à un projet de collecte de la microvariation syntaxique au sein du réseau européen Edisyn.
